Ng Tung Chai Waterfall Hike

Let’s visit some beautiful waterfalls in Hong Kong. On the Ng Tung Chai Waterfall hike, you can find multiple waterfalls and climb up through a small jungle. This hike could lead you even to the highest peak in Hong Kong (if you like to climb and hike that far).

The hike distance in our case was around 7.7 km from the Ng Tung Chai bus stop. It’s relatively safe on most parts. But it gets very steep in some areas. Actually, it was more a consistent climb up of rocky stairs. The area nearby of the waterfalls is slippery. Be careful.

Starting Point: How to reach the waterfalls

  1. Take the MTR to Kam Sheung or Yuen Long Station
  2. Catch the 64K bus to Ng Tung Chai Bus Stop
  3. Around 100m on your back, you will find the trail entrance on the opposite side of the road.
  4. Follow the signs to the Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls
  5. Pass the Man Tak Garden temple. You will pass it after a couple of minutes.
  6. After you visited at least four waterfalls, return to the Ng Tung Chai bus stop.

Arrived at the Main Fall

You will reach the first waterfall, called “Bottom Fall “, after an around 30 Minutes long walk from the bus stop. If you go ahead, you will next arrive “Middle Fall “after another 15 minutes only. From there, the path gets steeper and narrower. It will take you at least half an hour to reach the “Main Fall “.

From the “Main Fall”, please follow the rough path on the left. As it occurred a landslip, the pathway is partly covered with crushed rocks. On a rainy day, this path is not suitable to walk or run. Go further to the top; it leads to “Scatter Fall”.

Duration and Difficulty

The whole hike took us a bit more than four hours. Depending on how long you will rest and swim at one of the four falls, it may take longer for you. Don’t start too late in the day. Most websites mention that the hike is around 6 km long. But depending on your route, you may walk more – my AppleWatch recorded 7.7 km.

The hike is challenging, mostly because of the steep and rocky paths. You will climb a lot of rocky steps. I would classify the trek with a 7/10. The last pictures of my post show the trail just above of the Main fall.
